During January <br />H149, about 45 cracks in Freda siphon leaked an estimated 205 <br />gallons per minnte; the siphon at mile 18.30 leaked up to an esti- <br />mated 24 gpm; six cracks in West Wide Canyon siphon leaked 40 <br />gpm; and flow from old an(l new cracks in Lakeview siphon reached <br />an estimated 320 gpm, The dumping of sawduot in these siphons- <br />60 sacks in Freda, 23 sacks at mile 18,30, 25 oacks at West Wide, <br />and 50 sacks at Lakeview-wa~ sllccessful in stopping many of <br />the leaks and reducing the flow from others temporarily, There was <br />no opportunity during the fiscal year to do any rEpair work from <br />the inside of the siphons. Five leah on Lakeview siphon which did <br />not respond to the ,,"wdust treatment were calked from the out- <br />side with lead wool. with concrete collars placed around the pipe <br />at two of the locatiuns. By the eud of March 1949, the temperature <br />of the flowing water had increased sufficiently to reduce all leakage <br />to negligible quantities, <br />On the evening of July 22, 1948 there was a heavy downpour of <br />rain along the aqueduct, 1.10 inches being recorded at Iron <br />Mountain. There was no damage to the aqueduct, but the trans- <br />mission patrol road and telephone patrol road from Iron Mountain <br />to Danby Dry Lake were washed out in several places and several <br />drainage ditches on the Eagle Mountain access road were filled with <br />sand. The necessary repairs and clean-up work were performed <br />promptly, <br />A sharp earthquake shock occurred on December 4, 1948, but a <br />thorough inspection of the aqueduct revealed no damage; however, <br />six cracks with some leakage were observed in the West Wide <br />Canyon ~iphon. <br />Special safety precautions were taken during the year to remove <br />potential sources of accidents to the public on District property, <br />An old test pit at Fan Hi\! w'" tilled in. Two wells in Little Mo- <br />fango and Morongo Canyons were capped with 6-inch concrete slabs. <br />Three openings into old transformer \'aults at Cabazon were covered <br />with 6-inch slabs of concrete. 111 the vicinity of Potrero two 10-inch <br />well casingo were capped by welding metal bonneto over them. and <br />similar caps were welded on old wells in the vicinity of Valverde <br />tunnel shafts 3 and 4. At Yellow Canyon adit and Hayfield No.1 <br />tunnel adit the portal timbering was pulled do\\'n and the entrances <br />were completely buried with rock and earth, All construction camp <br />ceS"p0018.- investigation test pits, and explosives magazines that <br />could be located'along the aqueduct were filled, <br />
