<br />i.~" S <br /> <br />20 <br /> <br />METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT <br /> <br />to permit maintenance cleaning of canals, and for a period of three <br />days in March 1949 when flow in the San Diego aqueduct was tem- <br />porarily discontinued, The water carried in the aqueduct was ap- <br />proximately 200 cubic feet per second for all of the year except <br />during the month of September 1948 and the last ten days of .June <br />1949, when a two-pump flow of approximately 400 cubic feet per <br />second \vas delivered. <br />The crew in charge of the operation and maintenance of canals, <br />conduits, siphons, tunnels. and reservoirs of the main aqueduct <br />consisted of nine men under the direction of a general foreman <br />responsible to the chief operation and maintenance engineer, The <br />primary responsibility of all main aqueduct forces was the protec- <br />tion of the quality of water delivered to the terminal reservoir at <br />Lake Mathews and to the San Diego aqueduct. Reservoirs, canals, <br />and pumping plant forebays were periodically inspected, sampled, <br />and spot-treated with copper sulphate when required for control <br />of algae, Shorelines of reservoirs were cleaned of tules, brush, <br />and debris. <br />The maintenance crew regularly patrolled and inspected the sys- <br />tem, repaired canal fences, filled in voids behind canal lining, main- <br />tained canal dikes and diagonal drains, graded and maintained <br />patrol roads, removed sand and debris from sand traps and Rand <br />fences. repaired leaks. and serviced automotive and maintenance <br />equipment. <br />Considerable sand was blown into the open canal during the <br />year. This material was retained in the sand traps which were <br />cleaned cut periodically by wH!-\hing the sides u:-5ing a pressure <br />pump and hose, scraping the bottoms, and removing the sand and <br />debris from the traps with a truck crane and clamshell bucket or <br />by pumping with a dredge pump, Canal bottoms and slopes were <br />scraped clean of a scale of algae, sand, curing compound, and other <br />foreign material. During the two 5-day shutdown periods in <br />October and November 1948, scraping was done by means of trac- <br />tors with bulldozers operating on the canal bottom, and the material <br />was removed using a truck crane and clamshell. When water was <br />flowing, scraping was done u:~ing a truck crane with steel beam <br />drag. <br />Leakage f!'om sp-vpral main aqueduct siphons was again abo\'e <br />normal during the winter period from November 1948 through <br />March 1949. cauHed by the contraction of the concrete due to the <br />low temperature of the water during this period.
