At the planning conference the recommended plan was approved.

4. The recommended plan' consists of lining 55.5 miles of canals and laterals.

5. Planning Report/Draft Environmental Statement is still scheduled for April

1985.

6. The Grand Valley Water Users Association, Colorado Division of Wildlife,

and Reclamation met in January to discuss the problem of deer losses in

the Stage One portion of the Government Highline Canal. Deer and elk in

the canal are a significant safety problem to human rescuers as well as

to the animals themselves. The Bureau is now preparing recommendations.

2. A biological opinion received from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

concluded that Stage Two would not jeopardize any endangered species.

3. Meetings have been held with water user organizations to receive their

suggestions on possible organization of the private laterals.

4. Third Regional Project Committee meeting was held on January 24. Issue

of using pipe or open laterals was discussed. Decided more research was

needed before a decision on the laterals could be made.

5. Exploratory drilling on the cobble aquifer was 55% complete in January

but was suspended when a gas line was hit resulting in fire and damage

to the drill rig.

5. Data collection is continuing.
