.

.

2. La Verkin Springs Unit

.....
(,)1
(>:)
CJ Preliminary Findings Report was submitted 8 February 84 recommending
that the project not proceed into the next phase of study. Estimates show
only 4.1 mg/L reduction at Imperial for least expensive alternative.
Estimated cost for least expensive alternative $2 million per mg/L

reduction at Imperial Dam. Forum is presently reviewing the report for

input into Reclamation's decision on continuing the project. Decision to

be made by Reclamation after 9 March 84.

3. Lower Virgin Unit

This is an investigation of a potential salinity control and water

supply project that would encompass the Lower Virgin River 8asin, extending
from 14 miles above Littlefield Springs in Arizona to the high waters of
Lake Mead, Nevada. This investigation was scheduled to be reinitiated in
October, 1983, but did not start until January 84 as part of the Colorado
River Water Quality Improvement Program. Large amounts of salts from

Saline Springs and agricultural waste water enters the Lower Virgin River.

Removal of this saline underflow through a series of well fields would
reduce the salinity of the Virgin River and thereby also reduce salinity of

the Colorado river Basin. The removal of the saline underflow will result

in a new water supply which can be efficiently used to supply cooling water

for power plants and other industrial users. The State of Nevada and the

Nevada Power Company are very interested in the development of a firm water

supply from the Virgin River for industrial cooling.
