Blowing S(lOW and freezing
temperatures ClJused Colorado to cancel this demand on November 20,
1973, at 9:30 a.m. Storage by ttl1S time Ilad JCCllmulated to 1.865
acre.feet. On MJrch 7. 1974, il river flow demJnd of 15 cfs was released
to ColorJdo. Stor"Jge had reached 26,335 aCre-feet on this date. River
flow release of 15 cfs to Colorado water users was made during ten days
in March. .
Conselvation storage on April I, 1974, was 31,274 Jcre-feet. High
winds and deficient mOisture conditions during tile late winter and
,,>pring months caused both states to demilnd releJse of reservoir water
on April 1, 1974. Nedl" mJx;mum releases were mdfnlJined for eactl
state until the reservoir was emptied on April 18. The gJtes remained
opened Jnd the river was Jdminlstered Jccordlng to the Color,]do
Dnolity system until winter slol"age began at midnight on October 31.
1974.
The Purgatoire River ran two freshets during the season. One
occurred on June 24, 1974. when peak flow of 1,370 cfs was recorded
at tile La) Animas gaging station. TIle other freshet occurred on August
17 and peak flow at the Las Animas gaging station was 400 cfs. Two
small flows also occurred ,n Cheyenne Creek and Horse Creek near the
statellne. With the exception of these froods, tributary flow into the
Arkansas River WJS slight.
The liver flow into John Mar tin Reservoir during compact year
1974 amounted to 77,550 ilcre-feet, which fell far below the 1949-73
average of 174,761 acre-feet. DItch diversions during compact year
1974 In ColoradO Water District 67 were 97,004 aue-feet. Ditch
diversions 111 Kansas from the stateline to Garden City dunng the same
penod totaled 42,917 acre-feet.

9. Gaging StJtions

Empllasis was continued on performing additional field work to
increase the accuracy of the records and on providing current
streJmflow data to the AdministratIon and State officlJls as required.
In general, streamflow records of satisfactory accur.:!cy were obtained at
the Compact stations, except at tile stalion on the Arkansas River at
Las Animas where residual effects from construction of a new bridge
callsed interference with stJge-discharge lelationshlps during November
and December 1973.
It will be noted that there are differences in the leleases from the
les~fvoil., as measured af the gaging station, and the daily demands by
Colorado and KansJs. Perfect agreement call not be obtained, but to
minimiZe these differences the gJging station below John MJrtin
Reservoir WI)) be reJocJted Jt a site 1.5 miles upstream WhlCll is 0.2 mile
below the dam. A concrete control will be installed at the new site III
November" 1974, and a new recorder shelter Will be installed In

-8-
