At the end
of the quarter the program included investigations at 61 quality stations
on streams, reservoirs, and lakes, Ground water quality investigations
included the partial preparation of two chemical quality sections and the
review and revision of sections previOl1sly released in ground water reports.
Till preparation of a progress report on the chemical quality and sediJIIBnta-
tion of surface waters in the Grand River basin, South Dakota, was continued.
Basic data were compiled and released as completed.

The irrigation network program supported by Geological Survey
funds was' continued. This program included the investigations of the
chemical quality of surface waters at 3 main stem and 11 tributary stations.
The compilation of data for the 1955 water year was completed.

Sedimenta tion

The sedirn.entation program supported by Missouri Basin project
funds included investigations of the sediment discharge of streams at
37 stations in the Red River of the North, Big Hole, Gallatin, Marias,
Willow Creek, Yellowstone, White, James, Niobrara, Platte, and Kansas River
drainage basins; and studies of variable hydraulic parameters for sediment
transport for the Middle Leup River near Dunning, Nebraska. Field data for
the transport study representing water temperature and hydraulic conditions
were compiled and transmitted to the Bureau of Reclamation. Sediment
station data were released as completed.

The report "Erosion and deposition as indicated in stocK ~~ter
reservoirs in the Powder River basin" was revised and submitted for open
file release. The report "Simplified methods for computing the total
sediment discharge by the }lodified Einstein procedure" was nearly completed.

Sedimentation investigations in the !find- and Cheyenne River basins
which were supported by funds transferred by the Bureau of Reclamation
were continued.

Studies of upland erosion and deposition to provide basic
information on land treatment practices were conducted in conjunction
wi th hydrologic studies in the Willow Creek area, Montana, the Hind River
and Bighorn BaSins, Wyoming, and in the Box Creek area of the Cheyenne

ITN IF C~1 :i I r _tn

)i)-" ,
, .)f
CO,.
