1" :"'~~""i:
..... ..

Report on ~ations During Water Year 1978

.

Ruedi ReseJ:VOir

Ruedi Reservoir had 85,509 acre-feet of storage on SepteIrdJer 30, 1977.
FollCMing a belcw normal water year in which the reservoir did not fill,
the operation of the reservoir was m:xllfied to CXJnserve water until the
January.1 snow data were available. 'ItJe outflcw fran the reservoir was
maintained approximately equal to the inflcw fran October 1, 1977, until
January 5, 1978. 'I11e January 1 sncw survey data indicated that a
nonnal snow pack was developing, so the outflcw was inc~ased by sta'i!es.
Q1 January 5, 1978, the outflcw was increased fran ~6 ft /s to 69 ft /s
and on January 16, 1978, further increased to 94 ft Is.

Foll~g the Februcuy 1 runoff forecast, ~ outflcw was increased to
122 ft /s on February 1, 1978, and to 150 ft /s on Februcuy 2, 1978. Q1
Februcuy 21, 1978, the State Hyclrograprer assigned a new shift to the
outfl"'1 gage and the actual fJ.c1,y on that date was detennined to be
163 ft Is.

'I11e outflcw was increased to 212 ft3/s on March 7, 1978, when the March
1 sncw survey data slx:1.Ned that the sncw pack was :i.nproving. A new shift
was applied by the 1tate Hydrograprer on March 29, 1978 and the outflcw
was actually 176 ft Is.

.

Fol1~g the May 1 runoff forecast, the outflcw was increased to
229 ft Is. 'I11e outflcw was unchanged, except for a srrall increase due to
increasing head on the reservoir and shift changes, until June 16, 1978
when the outflcw was increased to closer IlBt~ the inflcw as the rese~ir
filled. 111e outflcw '?,s increased to 330 ft /spn June 16, to 381 ft /s
on June 20, to 506 ft /s on June 22, and 647 ft /s on June 23. Ruedi
Reservoir spilled on June 26, 1978.

111e reservoir level was then lowered approximately 2 feet belcw the
spillway crest and maintained at that level through July.

Fran August 1, 1978'3to August 17, 1978, the outflcw was maintained at
approximately 150 ft /s which resulted in a slight draMJown of the
reservoir. Q1 August 17, 1978, the outflow was reduced to equal the
inflow plus a srrall release of stored water to the State Highway L'epart-
ment that was purchased for ronstruction.

111e State Hig~y Department took delivery of 6 ft3 /s fran~t 15 to
August 29, 4 ft /s fran August 30 to September 6, and 1 ft /s fran
September 7 to September 13. A total of 258 acre-feet was delivered to
the State Highway Department.

There were no deliveries IlBde for replacement purposes.

.

3
