~
M
lJ?

2.3 Ecological Impacts
2.3.1 Aquatic Ecosystem

The major impact of the proposed project

in the aquatic ecosystem will arise from

the additional storage capacity added to

the Elkhead Creek Reservoir. The reservoi~,

which would be built by the Colorado

Division of Wildlife regardless of the

Yampa Project, will add new lacustrine

habitat in an area where none exists now.

The reservoir will be stocked with

coldwater fish such as trout and a

recreational fishery maintained.

The principal impact of the additional
capacity requirement of the Yampa Project

will be to flood relatively flat areas
upstream of the original shoreline (see
Figure 22). These areas will be rela-
tively shallow, and it is expected that

plants such as cattail and sedges will

establish themselves there, together

with various emergent and aquatic plants.

This kind of vegetation will provide

habitat for some songbirds, such as the

-155-
