If protected from

excessive human disturbance, this marsh

may develop into a nesting area for

certain duck species. The reservoir

~tself will be used for resting by

migrating waterfowl.

Drawdown, when it occurs, will not take

place during prime breeding seasons or

migration periods. Exposure of the

shallow mudflats at this time may prove

to be an ecological benefit, in that
nutrients leached into the mud will

be drawn, as it dries, to the surface

again. Together with nutrients and
organic matter provided by the decomposi-

tion of dead plant material from emergent

vegetation, this may result in increased
production of both plants and aquatic

insect larvae, a prime food of breeding
female ducks, the fOllowing spring.

Use of water from the Yampa River will

-156-
