The Conejos Division area consists of 116,200 acres of land within <br />the boundaries of the Conejos ~~ter Conservancy District in Conejos County, <br />and constitutes a portion of the San Luis V~lley in southern Colorado. The <br />authorized works for the division will provide a reeulated irrigati,on water <br />supply for the lands of the area and alleviate flood damages in the flood <br />plain of the Conejos River. <br /> <br />5. The lands of the division have an average elevation of approxir.~te- <br />ly 7800 feet. Climatic conditions in the area are reflected by the weather <br />bureau records for l'anassa, Colorado, which lies Tlithin the area; the annual' <br />precipitation averages 6.95 inches; average monthly temperatures range from <br />19.00 F. for January to 63.10 F.for July; and the length of period between <br />.killing frosts averages 100 days. Conejos County, which includes some irri- <br />gated lands not Tlithin the project area, had a population of 11,648 in 1940. <br />Antonito and Ilanassa, the principal tovms in the project area, had 1940 popu~ <br />lations of 1220 and 1008 respectively. <br /> <br />6. Of the total acreages vlithin the District's boundaries, 73,890 <br />acres are presently irrigated, 35,190 acres are not irrigated, and 7,120 <br />acres are in rights-of-way, farmsteads and similar use; of the 35,190 acres <br />not irrigated, 12,260 acres wero classed as irrigable by a land classifica- <br />tion survey completed in Hovember 1946. <br /> <br />'-- <br /> <br />7. Irrigation is necessary for crop production in this arid area. <br />Good yields are obtained from all crops adapted to the region when adequate <br />vmter is available. The present economy of the area is closely related to <br />the livestock industry, the principal crops being alfalfa and other tame <br />hays, native hay and small grains. potatoes, green peas and other truck crops <br /> <br />2 <br />
