Reeves
Chief', Engineering Division

F:l.le No: SWKGC-2.

Dear Sir:

Thank yoU for your letter of' December 17 and. for the opportunity of"
reviewing your review report on Survey for Flood Control along the Purgatoire
River. Mr. T,. G. McLaughlin, District Geologist, and I reviewed th:l.e report
inaccordandewith your suggestion and are returning it herewith.

We confined. our review largely to those sections dealing with the'
geology and related matters, and feel that these sections in general are
well prepared. , We have only one or two minor comments to make.

In the first and second lines on page 7 the report states "the Tertiary
formation' cOlll.Prises the f'oothills w!1ich have steep slopes and narroW valleys.
This is partly but perhaps not wholly true and depends upon which part of the
f'ooth:l.lls are considered., The western part of' the f'oothills in the vicinity
of Stonewall contain hogbacks of Cretaceous rocks west of' which are footh:l.lls
of' still older rocks. In order to be strictiy correct, therefore, you may
wish to modify the sentence to apply only to the eastern part of the f'oothills
(which also includes same Cretaceous rocks) or indicate that most of the
f'oothills are composed of Cretaceous and Tertiaryf'ormations.'

The geologic map in 'appendix F, volume 4, appears to be taken f'rom the
state geologic map of' Colorado, and may show the geology :l.n suff'icient detail
f'or the purpose intended. If'more deta:l.ls should be required, however, yoUr
attention is called to the f'act that the Geological Surveybl.s published a much
more deta:l.led geologic map of' ;the Stonewall-Tercio area and a geologic map of'
the remainder of' the area covered by your report is now:l.n process' c!lf' publication.
This work was done by members of' the, Fuels Branch of' the Geological Survey
located in Albuquerque so if' you are interested in following this up or i1a
getting copies of' the published map you may wish to consult with Mr. Lewis S.
Gardiner, u. S. Geological Survey, Bi:ld.ley Hs.ll,Universityof' New Mexico,
Albuquerque, New Mexico.

APPENDIX G
Exhibit No.6
Page 1 Df 2

-,,',
