.

.

.

0898

It is regretted that it was not possible to supply these
conunents bj- January 16, 19))3. The Bureau of Mines and the Geological
Survey ware not aware that consideration was being given to the Trini~
dad Reservoir site until receipt of your letter of November 28, 1952,
follow~:ng which it was necessary for the Bureau of Mines 'tomilke ad-"
justments in work schedules in order to undertake some nGcessar;y- field
invf'stigations for preparing the comments. Because of the importance
of questions that have been raised with respect to the effect of the
Trinidad ,Reservoir on coking coalrosources', it is fortunate that the
area is one in which the Geological Survey.has recently completed geo-
logic and coal resources mapping and studies. On~' part of the results
of these studies have been published, but they provide us with much
factual information, although by no means all that is neoded for a
complete solution of the problem.

It is pertinent that in many other areas where dams m~ be
under consideration, adequate geologic and mineral resource inforuation
is.not'available and cannot be obtained on short notice. Accordingly,
in order to avoid delay in :the future, I would urge that contact be
made with the mineral resource agencies of the Government, particUlarly
the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines, at as early a stage as
possible in'the consideration of projects, preferably as soon as a site
or sites have been definitely selected, to that they ma;}' obtain and pro..,
vide pertinent data. ,It is, of oourse, evident that these Bureaus,
while desirous of contributing such data as they may have or can readily
obtain, may find it necessary to undertake investigations of a magll1tude
that .vill re~uire additional financing over and above their regular ap..,
propriations, in which event other arrangements for financing and assien-
ment of personnel for the work would be neces.sary.

The copy of the preliminv,ry report transmitted to me with your
letter of December 9, 1952, is returned hereW1th.

Sincerely yours,

t/ / ;-J.;

C.
