Special studies of Level C have been initiated to deter- <br />mine the feasibility for regional water supplies in the area. Federal, <br />State and local interests must implement equitable cost sharing <br />procedures for water resource development. <br /> <br />6. McClellan-Kerr Navigation Project, ASA 1104. The prohlpm <br />area includes navigation channel from Catoosa to PIne Bluff (exit <br />from AWR) including the waterway and related land area. Water <br />issues are operation and maintenance and quality. Land issues are <br />flooding along channel in rural and urban areas, erosion and stabil- <br />ity of channel, and land uses along waterway. A special study was <br />made by the Corps of Engineers in conjunction wIth Arkansas Game <br />and Fish Commission to identify areas for preservation of fishery <br />habi tat. <br /> <br />7. Arkansas River - Fort Smith to Pine Bluff, ASA 1104. The <br />problem area is the Arkansas River Basin from Fort Smith to Pine <br />Bluff and includes all or a part of eight counties in West Central <br />Arkansas. Water issues are the lack of adequate quslity groundwater, <br />and surface water storage. Land issues are flood control. Several <br />Level C studies and special studies have been made and these studIes <br />need to be implemented. <br /> <br />B. MId-Arkansas, ASA 1104. The problem area Includes all or <br />a part of Conway, Faulkner and Pulaski Counties In Central Arkansas. <br />The 1,540 square mile study area has an approximate populatIon (1970) <br />of 300,000. Water issues are lack of quality groundwater and sur- <br />face water storage. Land issues are rural and urban flooding. <br />Corps of Engineers Urban Study is in progress and a special water <br />supply feasibility study has been completed. <br /> <br />9. Little Rock Urban Study, ASA 1104. The study area includes <br />the Little Rock SMSA. Water issues are: flood control, water sup- <br />ply, waste water management, and maintenance of an esthetic waterway. <br /> <br />10. Western Arkansas, ASA 1107. The problem area Includes <br />all or a part of Polk, Howard and Sevier Counties, Arkansas. Water <br />issues are lack of quantity and quality groundwater and surface <br />water storage, and lack of an interstate compact. Land issues and <br />flooding in rural and urban areas, erosion and bank stabilization. <br /> <br />11. Southwest Arkansas, ASA 1107. The problem area includes <br />Miller, Lafayette and Columbia Counties in southwest Arkansas. <br />Water issues are depletion of groundwater aquifers, lack of inter- <br />state compact, lack of treatment and distribution of available sur- <br />face supplies. Land issues are urban and rural flooding, erosion <br />and bank stabilization. <br /> <br />12. Black River Problem Area, ASA 1101. Water issues are <br />lack of interstate compact, navigation, recreation, and high water <br />table adjacent to stream.
