, OO~224

.

.

in the Aspen area as well as a pipe and pumping system
from Ruedi Reservoir. They are also further studying
possible locations for the pipeline from Ruedi Reservoir
along the Fryingpan River. The goal is to establish the
most economical location that will not unduly interfere
with aesthetics and the environment.

Salinity Studies

FWQA funded a demonstration grant study near
Grand Junction, Colorado, to determine the effectiveness
of canal and lateral lining in reducing saline outflow to
the Colorado River. Results of this study should be avail-
able early in 1972.

The Bureau of Reclamation now proposes to launch
feasibility studies to determine the best method of control-
ling salinity in the Colorado River Basin under authority
of the various public laws related to quality of water.
Initial efforts would be made in FY 1971 and FY 1972 with
limited funds available in the Bureau's program. An ex-
panded program would be launched in FY 1973. Studies will
be handled by both Region 3 and Region 4 and begin with
the Laverkin Springs on the Virgin River, Paradox Valley in
western Colorado, and Crystal Geyser in eastern Utah.

The Colorado Water Conservation Board has just
received a final report prepared by the Ken R. White Company
of Denver, Colorado and the URS Research Company of San Mateo,
California , on Improving Municipal Water Supplies by De-
salting. This report which was made for the Water Board and
the Office of Saline Water, considered the feasibility of
desalting in six selected communities in Colorado, with
water having total dissolved solids ranging from 565 to 3075
milligrams per liter. The populations of these communities
varied from 2,600 to 9,000 people. The estimated costs for
desalting with reverse osmosis ranged from $0.76 to $1.22
per 1000 gallons.

CWCB/LDM/mm - 5/26/71 -3-
