~

Uu2223
.

.

.

I

months ago and the advance planning work is again in
progress. Most of the work has been concentrated on
additional investigations of the Ridgway Damsite. The
reservoir as now planned would inundate the town of
Ridgway and there are also some foundation problems at
the damsite. Because of these factors, four downstream
axes for the dam have been 80nsidered. In the studies to
date, the selection has been narrowed to the original axis
and one downstream location. These studies indicate that
the downstream axis would be geologically superior but
higher in cost than the original site. Work is now
beginning on additional foundation drilling and water
testing to provide data for final selection of the site.

Inquiries concerning the availability of Dallas
Creek project M&I water are continuing to be received by
the Bureau and the Tri-County Water Conservancy District.
Recently a request was received from the Kemmerer Coal
Company for 24,000 acre-feet of water in connection with
a potential coal-burning steam electric plant a few miles
upstream from Montrose, Colorado.

Considerable interest has been expressed by
representatives of several companies in obtaining Municipal
and Industrial water from the Yellow Jacket Project near
Meeker, Colorado. The project would provide about 50,000
acre-feet of M&I water annually. Requests have been
received for a total of 80,000 to 100,000 acre-feet annually.
Representatives of the Yellow Jacket Water Conservancy Dis-
trict and the Bureau of Reclamation were in Washington
recently discussing the type of contract with the Consol-
idation Coal Company, a subsidiary of Conoco, concerning
20,000 to 30,000 acre-feet of M&I water. The draft of the
Yellow Jacket Project report was recently revised to reflect
the recent compromise for big game range improvement and to
provide additional stream by-passes for fishery purposes.
Project benefits, costs and financial data were also updated.

Some revisions have been made in the plan for the
Basalt Project near Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Since
foundation exploration at the Castle Creek Damsite indicated
that storage at the site would be quite costly, the Bureau
has been investigating alternative sources of water supply
for the City of Aspen and surrounding areas. These alter-
native sources include the Roaring Fork and its tributaries

-2-
