<br />I <br />I <br />I <br />t <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />G0175? <br /> <br />HEALTH, EDUCATION AND WELFARE, DEPARTMENT OF <br />INDIAN HEALTH SERVICE <br />WATER AND RELATED LAND RESOURCE PROGRAM <br />IN THE MISSOURI RIVER BASIN <br /> <br />PROGRAM TITLE: Indian Sanitation Facilities (Public Law 86-121 Program) <br />Indian Health Service <br />Health Services Administration <br />Department of Health, Education and Welfare <br />Federal Assistance Catalog Number 13.229 <br /> <br />ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS: Federally recognized Tribes, Bands, Groups, and Communities <br />composed of persons of Indian or Alaska Native descent who <br />are within the funded scope of the Indian Health Service Program. <br /> <br />PROGRAM PURPOSE: To alleviate unsanitary conditions, lack of safe water supplies <br />and inadequate waste disposal facilities which contribute <br />to the high rate of infectious and gastroenteric diseases among <br />Indians and Alaska Natives, the Indian Health Service <br />engages in environmental health activities, including construction <br />of sanitation facilities for individual homes and communities. <br /> <br />CURRENT OBJECTIVES: The objective of the Indian Sanitation Facilities Program is to <br />raise the health of Indian and Alaska Native people by <br />providing them with safe domestic water supplies, and adequate <br />means of waste disposal and other essential sanitation facilities <br />which .will improve the environment in which they live. A <br />further objective is to encourage and develop their desire and <br />capability to operate and maintain the facilities provided <br />in a safe and effective operating condition so as to assure continued <br />health protection and benefits in the future. <br /> <br />PROGRAM ORGANIZATION: The program receives general direction from the Indian Health <br />Service Headquarters at Rockville, Maryland through its Office <br />of Environmental Health and is implemented in Indian country <br />through 8 Area and 4 Program Offices located throughout the <br />nation. Each of these Area and Program Offices has an Office <br />of Environmental Health which is responsible for the conduct <br />of such sanitation facilities projects as may be approved <br />by the Area/Program Director. In addition to the Indian <br />Health Service and requesting Tribe, Band, or Group, the <br />participation of States, political subdivisions thereof, <br />non-profit entities and others is authorized on a contributory <br />basis. <br /> <br />1 - 17 <br />
