As such, the
Indian Health Service provides direct health services to Indian and Alaska
Native people through 51 hospitals, 99 health centers (including 27 school
health centers), and several hundred other health stations which are ser-
viced through 11 IHS Area/Program offices and 88 Service Units. The basic
mission of Indian Health Service is to provide a comprehensive health ser-
vice delivery system, within available resources, for American Indians and
Alaska Native people with sufficient options to provide for tribal involve-
ment in meeting their health needs. The goal for the Indian Health Service
is to raise the health level of the American Indians and Alaska Native
people to the highest possible level. With the passage of P.L. 93-638,
Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act, and P.L. 94-437,
Indian Health Care Improvement Act, the capability for Indian Health Ser-
vice to achieve this goal has been greatly enhanced."
