As such, the <br />Indian Health Service provides direct health services to Indian and Alaska <br />Native people through 51 hospitals, 99 health centers (including 27 school <br />health centers), and several hundred other health stations which are ser- <br />viced through 11 IHS Area/Program offices and 88 Service Units. The basic <br />mission of Indian Health Service is to provide a comprehensive health ser- <br />vice delivery system, within available resources, for American Indians and <br />Alaska Native people with sufficient options to provide for tribal involve- <br />ment in meeting their health needs. The goal for the Indian Health Service <br />is to raise the health level of the American Indians and Alaska Native <br />people to the highest possible level. With the passage of P.L. 93-638, <br />Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act, and P.L. 94-437, <br />Indian Health Care Improvement Act, the capability for Indian Health Ser- <br />vice to achieve this goal has been greatly enhanced." <br />
