l!':)
CJ
~
L"'::

c

care, operation, and maintenance. No change in water diversions are
made .by the Yuma County Water Users' Association from Siphon Drop
Powerplant, California Wasteway, or the Colorado River Siphon except
as requested or directed and at the time and in the amounts approved
by the River Operations Branch. The USGS is responsible for reporting
records of flow through Siphon Drop Powerplant, diversions from the
Yuma Main Canal to the Colorado River Siphon, and in the California
Wasteway to the river.

.......

High flows during 1980 deposited large amounts of sediment in the
Imperial Reservoir. The diversion pools above the headgates to the
two canals are scheduled to be dredged in 1982.

In compliance with Executive Order 11988, the flood plain area below
Imperial Dam was closed to camping late in the summer. It appears
that most of the campers went to areas north of the All-American Canal
and the Senator Wash area.

Bureau of Land Management I s plans to develop other campsites in the
Imperial Dam and Senator Wash area located on lands above the flood
plain were curtailed due to lack of funds.

Holiday weekends continue to attract large crowds of recreation
seekers, principally from the populated California coastal cities.
Law enforcement and vandalism problems were minor; the greatest
problems are the increased traffic on one-way bridges and the litter
left behind.

Water was diverted to Mittry Lake from the Gila Desilting Basin during
most of the year and amounted to 6,394 acre-feet. This water is
generally routed through Mittry Lake for improvement of water quality
and returned to the river system at Laguna Reservoir. Some water is
diverted from the Mittry Lake Canal to irrigate a waterfowl feeding
area adjacent to Mittry Lake.

3. California Sluiceway

About 2,000 cfs of the excess water arriving at Imperial Dam were
released through the California Sluiceway gates during much of
January. After January, normal sluicing operations of 7,500 to 8,000
cfs flows for 15- to 20-minute periods were resumed. The channel is
in good condition with the water surface in the sluiceway below the
invert of the desUting basin sludge pipes. The sluicing program
continues to be an effective means of moving the sediment discharged
from the desilting basins downstream to the Laguna Desilting Basin.
The dredge was able to remove much of the sediment accumula tions
occurring in 1980 as the incoming sediment load in 1981 decreased
considerably.

11
