DRAFT

SECTION 3 - DESCRIPTION OF THE SELECTED AL TERNA TIVE

The information in this section is based primarily on the Colorado Native Aquatic Species
Conceptual Design Report prepared by FishPro in November 1996 and on discussions
with:

. Larry Harris, Eric Hughes and Eddie Kochman of CDOW;

. Ken Ferjancic of FishPro; and

. Ross Bethel of Leonard Rice Consulting Water Engineers.

The Colorado Native Aquatic Species Restoration Facility will provide refuge,
propagation, and rearing space for those native aquatic species, which are indigenous to
Colorado. The primary goal will be to provide a means for aiding in their recovery and to
help preserve and restore viable populations.

The facility will be designed for maximum cultural versatility taking into account the
unique life history needs of each species through all life stages. Naturalized rearing
practices will be employed, insofar as practicable, in order to maximize on the genetic
integrity of what are wild and undomesticated organisms. Operation of the facility will be
strictly guided by the management and restoration needs of Colorado native aquatic
species.

The facility is intended to provide:

. refuge for selected brood fish and unique aquatic species or strain,

. opportunity to study and develop practical understanding of species habitat
requirements and inter- and intra- specific relationships that pertain to future
management of the species and their ecosystems,

. protective rearing space for Colorado native aquatic species to be used in
augmentation programs,

. a centralized location for dissemination of information and education on native
aquatic species natural history and management,

. centralized coordination for native aquatic species culture activities, and

. a research environment to carry out activities such as developing culture techniques,
imprinting, behavioral studies, and life history studies.

3-1
