<br />SALINITY CONTROL <br /> <br />Progress is continuing on three ot the <br />four authorized units under the Salinity <br />Control Prolect (Paradox, Grand Valley, <br />Las Vegas Wash). The accomplishments <br />in fiscal year 1985 are as follows: <br /> <br />Units Authorized For Construction <br /> <br />Paradox Valley Unit: Tile Bureau ot Rec- <br />lamation is In tile process ot preparing <br />specifications for award of an injection <br />well contract to verity the process ot <br />reducing salinity in tile Dolores River. <br /> <br />Grand Valley Unit: All construction on <br />Stage One, whietl consists at about 10 <br />percent at the total program, IS basically <br />complete. A supplement to the Grand <br />Valley Unit Definite Plan Report and the <br />Dratt Environmental Statement (DES) <br />have been prepared. The DES was filed <br />with EPA September 24. 1985. The Final <br />Environmental Statement is scheduled tor <br />the summer of 1986. As soon as it is <br />filed, construcllon can begin on the re- <br />mainder 01 the unit <br /> <br />Las Vegas Wash Unit: A contract was <br />awarded to construct the 35 mile Pitt- <br />man bypass pipeline and completion date <br />was October 1984. The curtailment of <br />seepage trom the unlined ditches is <br />expected to cause a rapid drop In ground <br />water levels in tile Pittman area. resulting <br />In reduced loading ot 8,000 tons per year <br />In Las Vegas Wash. Monitoring of the <br />resulting ground water cllanges is expec- <br />ted to continue through fiscal year 1987 <br />when an assessment Will be made of the <br />results ot the Pittman Vellfication Pro- <br />gram. <br /> <br />Anothel strategy to further reduce salinity <br />loading is using ground water barriers in <br />other areas 01 the Wash. Conlinued close <br />coordinatioll Witll local interests will be <br />necessary to gain supporl on further <br />plans for salinity control. wastewater <br />treatment. wcllands park, and recreation <br />land use. A verification effort rlas been <br />proposed to test the effectiveness 01 the <br />ground wator barrier concept with a <br />monilollng progc8m <br /> <br />Crystal Geyser Unit: Tile Crystell Geyser <br />Unit has been d"lerred Indefinitely be- <br />cause of low cost eftectlveness <br /> <br />Units Authorized for Planning <br /> <br />The ten units authorized for planning <br />under the Water Ouality Improvement <br />Program are at various stages within the <br />planning process as lollows: <br />Big Sandy River Unit: At the request at <br />Ihe Slale of Wyoming, Reclamation is do- <br />ing additional studies, mainly involving lin- <br />ing of canals and laterals in the Eden- <br />Farson areas. <br /> <br />Dirty Devil River Unit: The recommend- <br />ed plan IS collection and disposal of brine <br />from Emery South Salt Wash and Hanks- <br />ville Salt Wash by deep well Injection. <br /> <br />Glenwood-Dotsero Springs Unit: A <br />planning report concluding the study is <br />now being prepared. The preferred plan <br />is not cost-eltective at the present time. <br /> <br /> <br />Silll Cllol1Q S;m ,Juan t11Vl)r <br /> <br />La Verkin Springs Unit: A preliminary <br />findings report was released in August <br />1984 recommending the study be <br />discontinued because ot poor cost- <br />effectivoness. This recommondation has <br />been concurred in by trle Salinlly Control <br />Forum and the Commissioner's Office. <br /> <br />Lower Gunnison Basin Unit: On Oc- <br />tober 30. 1984. PubliC Law 9B-569 was <br />passed authorizing construction in the <br />Uncompahgre Valley area of the Lower <br />Gunnison BaSin Unit A contract was <br />executed in June 1984 between the <br />Bureau of Reclamation and Tri-County <br />Water Conservancy District for the winter <br />water replacement portion of the study. <br />Data collection on the Lower Gunnison <br />Basin Unit-North Fork Area IS underway. <br /> <br />11 <br />
