Lower Virgin River Unit: Additional
studies were programnwd to invostigate
tho viability 01 capturing Lower Virgin
River saline underllows and surfaco flows
and diverting tl1em tor Industrial use as
powerplant cooling water Fiscal year
1985 funds will provide lor investiga-
tion of tl1e potential alternatives for the
collection, conveyance, and use of the
saline wafer. USDA 11as publlsl1ed a
Virgin Valley on-farm salinity report
Implementation of the USDA program
is scheduled for initiation in 1985.

McElmo Creek Unit: Studios deter-
mined that the 1110st viable plan for this
salinity program was to combine
McElmo features Witl1 features at the
Dolores Project now under construc-
tion. Public Law 98-568, dated October
30. 1984 authorized thiS action. Supple-
ments to the Dolores ProJOct Definite
Plan Report and Environmental Impact
Statement are now being prepared in-
corporating McElmo Creek teatures
with Dolores.

Meeker Dome Unit: The planning report
concluding tl1e study was approved on
August 20, 1985. Monitoring still shows
that cleaning and plugging the wells was
successtul.

Price-San Rafael Rivers Unit: Data col-
lection is continUing. The plan consists of
lining leaky sections at Class A canals
and eliminating water in canals during tl1e
winter by enlarging and lining stock
waterrng ponds. The plan would reduce
salt loading at Impellal Dam by about
30,000 tons per year Reclamation is also

12

studying the pOSSibility of placing laterals
In pipe and combining tl1e laterals With
the SOil Conservation Service.s gravity
sprinkler irrigation system in a portion of
tilE: study area

Uinta Basin Unit: Data collection IS
continuing. The plan consists of lining
55.5 miles of canals and laterals and
would reduce salt loading at the Im-
perial Dam by about 25,000 tons per
year

San Juan River Unit: This unit was ap-
proved as a new planning start in

tlscal year 1986. The study will identify
causes at salinity and means to con-
trol it In the San Juan River Basin,
which includes Colorado, New Mexico,
Utah and Arizona. The Plan of Study
was approved on October 10, 1985.

Saline Water Use and Disposal
Opportunities Unit: This study is a Joint
effort between Reclamation and Western
Resource Transport (Westrans) to trans-
port coal by slurry line and study pOSSible
uses for saline water in the areas of
Wyoming. Colorado, Nevada and Utal1.

Sprinkling irrigation
