l\)
w
00
w;..

Status reports with recommendations for further action
will be issued on two of the 12 identified units in January
1978, Palo Verde Irrigation District, California, and the
Colorado River Indian Reservation, Arizona. Contract con-
sultants' reportsl conclude there is little chance for cost
effective salinity reduction from water system improvements.
Further, it is anticipated that the results of current 208
planning in those areas will identify best management prac-
tices that will minimize the salt contribution without the
need for physical facilities.

The U. S. Soil ,Conservation Service and the Bureau of
Land Management are continuing their studies related to
salinity control. The Soil Conservation Service is studying
six on-farm irrigation projects in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada,
Utah, and Wyoming. An on-farm study is being completed for
Grand Valley, Colorado, which formulates a plan to improve
irrigation efficiency thus reducing the salt loading to the
river.

During the Forum studies, the use of high salinity water
by San Diego Gas and Electric Company for power plant cooling
was identified as a means of salinity control. The company
continues vigorous pursuit of its plans for a major industrial
use of high salinity agricultural return flow rather than
mainstream Colorado River water. The Company's development
plan also includes compliance with the no-salt return policy.
Pilot facilities for plant cooling including chemical treat-
ment and lined evaporation ponds are currently under testing.

Arizona Public Service Company operates the 2175 MW
Four Corners Power Plant in the San Juan Basin in New Mexico.

l"Salinity Control and Irrigation System Analysis- Colorado River
Indian Reservation," Boyle Engineering Corporation, August 1976, and
"Reduction of Salt Loading to the Colorado River from Palo Verde Irriga-
tion District," Bookman-Edmonston Engineering, Inc., August 1976.

9

ji,;,..;Jj
