l\)
(..I.)
00
w

construction funds were appropriated by Congress for
fiscal year 1977 in the following amounts for the three auth-
orized projects: Paradox Valley Unit - $550,000, Grand Valley -
$730,000, and Las Vegas Wash Unit - $800,000. With adequate
funding by Congress in the ensuing years, Paradox Valley should
be in operation by 1983, and with an estimated total salt re-
moval capability of 180,000 tons per year. The first stage of
the Grand valley Unit, comprising some 6,000 acres in the western
end of the valley, is scheduled for completion in 1980, with the
entire project scheduled for completion in 1987. The Bureau of
Reclamation now estimates the full salt removal capability of
this unit to be about 400,000 tons per year. Some salt will be
removed within a few years after initiation of construction.
The full potential is projected to be achieved in the 1990's.
The f.irst. phase of the Las Vegas Unit is scheduled for comple-
tion in 1981, the second phase (desalting) would be added at
such time as the State of Nevada is in need of the water supply.

In addition to the activities associated with the auth-
orized projects, the Bureau is continuing its efforts on prepara-
tion of the feasibility level report.s of the other salinity
control units identified in P.L. 93-320, plus two new units
described below, and associated water quality improvement
programs.

One additional unit, Meeker Dome, Colorado, has been
added to the 12 originally identified units. This unit was
identified as a future possible unit in the Colorado River
Basin Salinity Control Forum's Report of June 1975. The Meeker
Dome unit is estimated to have the capability of removing
57,000 tons of salt annuaIly from the River system.

The Li t.tlefield Spr Ings Unit has been expanded by the
Bureau into a new unrt, the Lower virgin River Unit. The unit
will include Littlefield Springs, plus some downstream irrigated
areas in Arizona and Nevada. The Bureau estimated this expanded
project will remove 80,000 tons/year.

8

""
