Filing No. 7701 was also made in 1910 by other
private interests f"or construction of" a dam at
the Old Fort Eeservoir site about 1-1/2 miles
above Fort Morgan and below the mouth of" Bijou
Creek. This filing was supplemented in 1920 but
no f"urther action has been taken.

The Bureau of" Reclamation conducted a recon-
naissance in 1.944 and included the Narrows Reser-
voir in Senate Document No. 191, published in
April 1944, which provided the basis f"or authori-
zation. Six separate dam sites on the South
Platte River were studied. They were designated
the Hardin, Goodrich, Weldona, Narrows, Fort Morgan,
and Old Fort Morgan (Old Fort Reservoir) sites in
d01illstream order. The reconnaissance studies
resulted in elimination of" the Hardin, Goodrich,
and Old Fort Morgan sites. Further study elimin-
ated the Weldona site. -Subsequent dets.i1e<l. investi-
gations resulted in selection of" the Narrows site.

In October 1947 the Bureau of" Reclamation
began extensive subsurf"ace investigattons at the
Narrows Bite. A boar:! of" consultants concluded
in 1948 that a safe dam could be constructed at
that site.

Three hWldred thousand dollars was made
available in July 1947 for initiation of construc-
tion of the Nar>"ows Unit. Additional f"w1ds were
allotted in 1949, 1950, and 1951.

A survey in Fort Morgan' and the surrounding
area disclosed that housing was critically S90rtJ
consequently, in anticipation of construction
requirements, 16 peI'Ill8Dent-type prefabricate<l.
houses and gl;U'ages, an off"ice, a warehouse, and
two 7 -car garages were constructed in Fort Morgan by
July 1948.
