Environmental Overview

An overriding consideration in any projection of the future is

. '
'!

the Environment--both man-made and that of nature. We are sincerely

and effectively complying with the Environmental Protection Act of

1969, to provide a quality environment for man.

Despite a very tight personnel and funding situation, we have

added professionals to our,Washington and field staffs to advise

and guide us in environmental and ecological matters.

We are filing environmental statements as required and have

received a complimentary letter from Russell Train, Chairman of

the Council on Environmental Quality for our statement on the

San Juan atmospheric research project. We have contracted for

a monitoring of this weather modification effort to ascertain

its effects on the ecology of the area.

We are also going to great lengths to make the Navajo thermal

generating station at Page, Arizona, a model of pollution control

and, to the highest degree possible, prevention of pollution.

\1
I

The Bureau of Reclamation is in this plant both as one of the

participants and as the agent of the Secretary of the Interior

in carrying out pollution control requirements of the water

supply contract.

The Salt River project, which is the construction agency

t,

and will be the operating agent for the participants, has been

most cooperative with the result that I believe the generating

.:

station will be a model of the use of pollution abatement equip-

ment as far as the art has progressed.
