,

f

.

(2) Extensive exploration of the geothermal potential of

Imperial Valley in Southern California as a source of

desalted water to augment the Colorado River has been

underway in cooperation with the University of California

at Riverside since 1968. As the promising potential has

come into focus, we are accelerating our investigations.

The first status report on these explorations is nearing

completion.

(3) On-going State and Federal studies and programs have

been evaluated to determine their ability to meet the water

needs identified in interagency comprehensive basin frame-

work studies.

(4) An inventory of potentials for recla1nnng and reusing

waste waters is underway.

(5) Guiding standards and principles for the study by the
management group are under preparation.
(6) Analysis of underlying assumptions used in past projections
of population and economic factors is under review by State and

Federal agencies.

(7) Work on the first interim report to Congress due July 1,
1971, is underway.

While much of the first year was devoted to organization of the

study, progress has been made in actual planning activities. The decks

are now cleared for rapid progress in formulating a comprehensive Westwide

plan for water resources development.

~

10

3116
