O'l~'"~'''
Ut...o") .

One gets further insight into the future of the Missouri Basin by
looking at the projections for the various types of employmerit. Overall
emp~oyment has increased from 2,236,000 in 1940 to 2,985,000 in 1960 and
is expected to increase to 7,826,000 in 2020. But, looking at the
various components of the employment, and here just the major components
of agriculture, manufacturing, other commodity-producing industry and
the non-commodity sector, we note that agriculture haS decreased from
about 36 percent of the total employed in 1940 to 17 percent in 1960 and
to a.little over 3 percent in 2020. Actually, because of the increasing
employment in the Missouri Basin the number employed in agriculture does
not change as much as the percentage changes. In 1940 there were
792,000 employed in agriculture; in 1960, 512,000 employed in agriculture;
and in 2020 it is projected there will be 249,000 employed in agriculture.
During the same period manufacturing increases from .8.5 percent of the
total employed in 1940 to 13.8 percent of the total employed in 1960,
and 15.4 percent in 2020. The actual figures for manufacturing are
190,000 in 1940; 411,000 in 1960; and 1,202,000 in 2020. other commodity-
producing industry increases its.proportion of the total employment
somewhat in the early years, and from 1960.on, .holds about the sBllle
percentage. The non-coMmodity-producing industry increases from 51
percent of the total population in 1940 to about 62 percent in 1960, and
74 percent in 2020.

The Missouri River Basin is a graving econaDy and is. developing into
a highly diversified economy. The major urban areas in the Basin are
rapidly expanding in terms of population and industrial activity and are
characterized by a variety of industries. Agriculture is still one of
the more important economic activities of the Basin, but given the
continued growth in the non-agricultural sector, we can optimistically
expect the Basin's economy to .canpare very favorably with the Nation in
the future.

.

..

25

~!;;;.

. ~...J"'~
::";::<'!l..
"~~.~ :::
:'::".i.:

~:t~

..,

". ........

::\",'.:.,.

~.~.:~~:::;.' ~
::.... .:..
i:,'~'..: ,":"(

.~::;::;.~.~.:
.:....:.:....;...
{.::-.;....: :-"

,.
:<;~.jr-.:.
:l-..; ~

......."-..
~1}:~ :<
:.:.:'..-";.
~~)?::-:::
(~~~::..~'.~
~:;.;::'~.:::'.
t:~)A:
~f~~l
~~~tf.t~
, .........
i{i.~1~:i
~;t~l~:~1
:;:/iT:~
I
f/~.6~;1
'.
