is now being resolved by the Standing Committee and it is expected that
by clearly defining the terminology used it will be possible to proauce
In connection with the Comprehensive Framework Study it Is intended
to look forvard over the years, recognizing the economic growth that can
be expected in the Missouri Basin and providing a measure of land and ~ter
needs to the Year 2020, vith bench marks at 1980 and the Year 2000. Most
of the future changes in land use will result from the determination of
needs and through the development of the framework plan for the Missouri
Basin. It is from the result of analyses of the framework plan that most
of the projected figures with respect to land use will be obtained; however,
in connection ~ith the lands study to date, we have done projections in four
of the resource functional fields; that of transportation, urban and bul1t-
up areas .nich relate to the people living in the towns, primarily; and in
mineral industry lands. For military lands, not being able to forecast the
demands for the military, the projected requirements for lands for 19Bo,
2000, and 2020 were kept the same as the utilization of lands for this pur-
pose in 1965. For the transportation, urban and built-up lands, currently
these lands utilize 6,847,000 acres. It is projected that 7,659,000 acres
vill be required in 1980, 8,389,000 acres in 2000, and 9,296,000 acres in
2020. For the mineral industry, the 1963 level of resource use was 34,000
acres. This will increase to 54,000 acres in 1980, 71,000 acres in 2000,
and 90,000 acres in 2020.

In other fields, data were assembled and analyzed far use of the Develop-
ment Group on lands which appear physically suitable for irrigation and ~hich
are required' to provide for indicated needs for recreation, fish and wildlife.
In conjunction with the Economic Base Study consideration was given to the
capability of' agricultural lands to support, with projected crop yields, the
needs assigned to the Missouri Basin for food and fiber. Some adjustments
in cropping pattern were allowed in this determination.
