producer for spring and summer runoff for vater supply. Although, it 16
generally appropriately considered as an area for raising trees and har-
vesting timber and other ~ood products. Generally, most land can be
considered under one use by common practice. "Thus, W"e generally think
of land in terms of crop land, range land, forest land, recreation land,
etc. This has been characterized for the Comprehensive Framework Study
as the "primary" use, although It may be as useful for other purposes.
~e searched for a designation for the other uses of the land to identify
them from "primary." -..Je did not like many of the terms cOOlmonly used,
like 'secondary," as they tended to depreciate these other uses, and l,/e
adopted the tenn "ancillary" to cover the uses other than "primary."
have been classified as "primary" are:
An entirely different picture is obtained when one looks at the
ancillary uses of the land. This is the resource functional use of the
area; as an illustration - although recreation 1s the primary user of
only 2,802,000 acres of land, it is felt that of the crop land, 8,935,000
acres are useful to recreation; of the forest and woodland, 17,038,000 are
useful to recreation; of the pasture and range land, 34,595,000 are useful
to recreation; of the other agricultural land, 93,000 are of use to recrea-
'tion. Of the fish and wildlife area, 1,284,000 acres are useful to recrea-
tion; of the transportation and urban lands, 388,000 are useful to recrea-
tion; of the WBter area, 2,775,000 acres are useful to recreation; 2,000 acres
of the land primarily for mineral industry are useful to recreation; and
34,000 acres of the military lands are useful to recreation. This is merely
