A second division which is pertinent to water and related land re-
sources planning is the division of the total area of the land and water
area. Of the 330 million acres of total area, there are approximately
3,900,000 acres of water area. Of this amount 2.7 million, or about
70 percent are water areas of over 40 acres In extent and about 1,200,000
acres are in vater areas of less than 40 acres. Here again, there is con-
siderable variation among the various subbasins, with the Eastern Dakota
Tributaries having the largest percentage of total water areas, amounting
to about 2-1/2 percent of the total, to the Yellowstone where only 7/10 per-
cent of the total is vater surface.

Land Use - The use being made of the lands Is of relatively high im-
portance to the economy of the basin and to the Comprehensive Frame~ork
Study. In this connection it is also important to recognize the fact
that each acre of land may be utilized for more than one purpose. In fact,
some areas may serve several purposes simultaneously. Thus, the forested
area may also be used for grazing of cattle; recreatlonists may also use
it. ~11jlife generally abounds in such an area and it probably serves the
purpose of a catchment area for water, sno~fall, and thus becomes a good
