Land Availability.

Land Resource Base - The land resources of the Missouri Basin In
the United States amount to nearly 330 million acres. This Is approxi-
mately one-sixth of the conterminous United States and lies In the north-
central part. The topography of the area varies from high mountain peaks
In the Rocky Mountains at 14,000 feet mal through the foothills to plains
snd the lowlands to about 400 feet mal at the mouth near St. Louis

This area can be divided in several ~ys. One of our first considera-
tions was v1th respect to ownership and management. Privately-ovned and
State aod Local Government-managed lands amount to 285 million acres, or
about 86 percent; and Federal agency management amounts to 45 million acres,
about 14 percent of the total area. The proportion varies in the iadi vidual
subbasins vith private land ovnershlp being the highest in the Middle Mis-
souri Tributaries Subbasin, where 99.7 percent of the area is in non-Federal
ovoershlp. The lowest percentage of non-Federal ovnership is in the Yellov-
stone BaSin, vith approximately 64 percent of the land 1n this category.
