w
o
i\j
,.....,.

Fish and Wildlife Service
Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Program
Accomplishments for Fiscal Year 1996

The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has cooperated with the Basin States and other federal
agencies over the past year in keeping with its continuing responsibilities mandated in the Fish and
Wildlife Coordination Act and Endangered Species Act. The FWS supports agency actions .to
control salinity and thereby protect water ql!ality that is so important to terrestrial and aquatic
wildlife in the Colorado River Basin.

Reduced funding for salinity control programs in recent years has limited direct comment by the
FWS on specific projects and progrllms. Continuing areas of concernjnclude protection of
wetlands, concurrent and proportionate mitigation .of wildlife losses, and protection of endangered
fishes and their critical habitat in the Colorado River basin. Reclamation and the Bureau of Land
Management projects have fully addressed. these concerns to date. The Department of Agriculture,
with a policy of voluntary replacement of fish and wildlife losses, has not. The FWS will work
with the NRCS as they develop programs and projects under Environmental Qualitylncentives
Program (EQIP) to ensure protection of fish and wildlife resources in the basin.

7
