Assistance cons.isted of technical.
reviews of draft reports from the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) and organization of Aneth Field
Technical Committee meetings. A final meeting of the technical committee was held in September
1995 and a final report is undergoing review by USGS and cooperating agencies. Plans are being
made by the Navajo Tribe to cap some orphan flowing wells and by operators to cap some of their
abandoned wells.

EP A Region 8 continues to evaluate quarterly progress reports received from the USBR for the
Paradox Well Underground Injection Control (urC) permit. Since the current UIC permit expires
in 1996, EP A is assisting USBR on the process of applying for a new permit.

A continuing issue is the need to prevent the impact of selenium on the endangered razorback
sucker in the Green River near Vernal, Utah. A major part of the solution appears to be
improvements to the wastewater treatment system at Vernal. Such improvements would also
reduce salt 10ading.EPA Region 8 has been involved in an interagency attemptto structure a
funding package to address the sources of selenium and salt.

The Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Program continues to be promoted as an example of a
coordinated watershed approach as part of EP A's implementation of the Watershed Protection
Approach.

6
