. ...

l

1065

1937, as amended, which would contract with the United States for both

the payment of project services performed in the operation and main-

tenance of the Trinidad Reservoir, and the retirement of the capital

cost properly allocable to irrigation.

Water supply

Amount and source. The water supply for the proposed Trinidad

Reservoir project would be derived from the Purgatoire River. The flow

of the Purgatoire River in the project area consists of base flows,

snowmelt, and rain flows from intense sununer storms. A gaging station

has been maintained on the Purgatoire River at Trinidad since 1896 and

continuous records are available since 1916. A study of these records

shows the average annual discharge at this station for the study period

1925 to 1949 to be 65,100 acre-feet. Of this total flow, an average of

about 54,000 acre-feet annually has been diverted for irrigation use in

the project area. In addition to this supply, a total of about 500 acre-

feet annually has been diverted by the Model irrigation system from

Chicosa and other small arroyos.

Water rights. The water supply studies were based on the recorded

flows of the Purgatoire River at Trinidad, which reflect historical

diversions upstream from the project site. No future increase in up-

stream depletion of the river is anticipated. The Model Reservoir and

Johns Lake, units of the Model irrigation system, are the only storage
facilities in the project area. They have decreed water rights for the
storage of 20,345 acre-feet annually. Direct flow water rights on the

2
