..,.
,." '\
~f"~
, 1064

TRINIDAD RESERVOIR PROJECT (1)

General description and purposes
The proposed Trinidad Reservoir project would consist of the con-

struction of a dam at the Trinidad site, about four miles above the city
of Trinidad in the upper Purgatoire River watershed, for the purposes

of flood control, conservation of the water supply, and sediment control.

The project has the approval and support of local interests, and would

fit into the comprehensive plan for the development of the water re-

sources of the Arkansas River Basin in Colorado.

Development of the project would provide, during the 75-year eco-

nomic life of the improvement, flood protection for the city of Trinidad

and the agricultural area along the Purgatoire River below 1'rinidad, a

regulated and supplemental water supply for an irrigated area of
19,500 acres below Trinidad, and possible future domestic and industrial

uses. The project would also improve recreation and fish and wildlife

resources in the area. The project facilities would be constructed by

the Corps of Engineers, and upon completion the improvement would be

operated by the Bureau of Reclamation for irrigation and other purposes

in accordance with rules for flood control prescribed by the Secretary of

the Army.

The plan of operation would require the formation of a water con-

servancy district under the Colorado Water Conservation District Act of

(1)

Proviso clause projects under Section 205 of Flood Control
Act of 1950 pertall1ing to Arkansas~ite-Red Basins. These
projects have not been subjected to reanalysis and evaluation
and approval by the AWRBIAC.

J)~ .!.
