003117

Environment Riparian Habitat Analysis Group

Private land use practices involving riparian vegetation are unregulated
in Arizona. Accordingly, RHAG has been attempting to draw attention to
this problem through distribution of brochures and information on examples
of institutional alternatives used for riparian area preservation in other
areas. Three Arizona counties representatives have expressed interest and
one is actively drafting legislation. We are told that some of this
infonnation has reached Governor Bruce Babbitt's office. The Governor has
publicly expressed intent to perpetuate riparian habitat in some manner
on several occasions.

Instream Flow Study on the Fort McDowell Indian Reservation Reach of the
Verde River

The final report identifying instream flow needs for maintenance of a fishery
and riparian vegetation has been distributed.

Burrow Creek Instream Flow Study

A Memorandum of Understanding is being prepared between FWS and BLM for
instream flow measurements and probability of use curves in the reach of
Burro Creek below Bagdad.

Vegetation Management Study Along the Lower Colorado River

This study is jointly funded by FWS and WPRS. It is a feasibility study
designed to provide wildlife enhancement on dredge spoil and areas cleared
of salt cedar. The study will have application on future mitigation decisions
in the vicinity. The third and final year is beginning and the study is
already providing useful data.

Riparian Silviculture for the Enhancement of Wildlife

Effort is being made to initiate a feasibility study of producing riparian
forest products while simultaneously enhancing wildlife populations.
Because most riparian areas are private, the study would be directed
accordingly. Mesquite for fuel and cottonwood for lumber, fiber, forage,
and fuel are being considered.

C-53

.L ,-

:.d
