Listing (Cont'd):

2. One fish without critical habitat:

a. Bonytail chub (Gila elegans)

Listing packages for the following species have been forwarded to
Washington:

1. Three fish species with critical habitats:

a.
b.
c.

Yaqui chub (Gila purpurea)
Yaqui shinerLNOtropis f0111losus mearnsi)
Yaqui catfish (Ictalurus pricei)

2. Three plant species, two with critical habitat:

a. Hedeoma diffusum
b. Erigeron kuschei
c. Rumex orthoneurus

One fish proposed for listing has been withdrawn due to lack of time:

Razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus)

Hybrid Chubs

Three'female bonytail chubs were removed from Lake Mohave to Willow Beach
NFH as.part of the recovery for this fish species, bringing the number
being held there to five. As no male G. elegans were available, the ripe
eggs were stripped and fertilized with-milt from two closely related
species, Gila robusta (roundtail chub) and Gila cypha (humpback chub).

The purpose of this hybridization was spelled out in the bony tail chub
recovery plan to examine the morphology of hybrids and to detennine the
fertility of the hybrids.' Approximately 3,000 fry of each cross were moved
to Dexter NFH in New Mexico to prevent any escapement into the Colorado
River system where they might contaminate existing gene pools. The hybrid
fry are growing well at Dexter and are salllPled weekly.
, ,.

San Bernardino Ranch

The old Chisan Rancl1 was purchased by the Nature Conservancy under a
Memorandum of Understanding with the Service to obligate funds in FY 1982.
San Bernardino Ranch in southeast Cochise County holds the last remaining
U.S. populations of two Rio Yaqui fish species. Service plans are to
return the cienegas ori the ranch to their natural state and to reintroduce
all of the Rio Yaqui fish species (n=5) to the pools, springs and ponds on
the ranch. The Conservancy will care for the buildings, some of which are
registered historic landmarks.

C-52
