PURPOSE AND GOALS OF THE STUDY <br /> <br />The purpose and goals of this study are: <br /> <br /> <br />A. To determine the elifibility of the Elk River for inclusion in <br /> <br /> <br />the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. <br /> <br />B. To prepare alternative recommendations for the River and its <br /> <br /> <br />immediate environment concerning inclusion in the National System. <br /> <br />C. To evaluate each alternative recommendation as to its effect upon <br /> <br />environmental quality, national economic development, regional <br /> <br />development and social well-being. <br /> <br />D. To involve the public in development of alternatives and re- <br /> <br />commendations. <br /> <br />E. To prepare a report that will make recommendations to Congress on <br /> <br />a management direction for the river and its immediate environment <br /> <br /> <br />based upon 1) the river's eligibility for inclusion into the <br /> <br /> <br />'National System, 2) an environmental/economic and social evaluation <br /> <br /> <br />of the alternative recommendations, and 3) public input. Preliminary <br /> <br /> <br />management guidelines will be included in the report. <br /> <br />IV. OVERALL SCOPE OF THE STUDY <br /> <br />The study will consider the segment of the Elk River authorized for study <br /> <br /> <br />by Congress. The study area will include the Elk River drainage above <br /> <br />--. -I <br /> <br />Clark. The specific river corridor under study will include one-quarter <br /> <br />o' mile strips of land along either side of the river or lands within line- <br /> <br />of-sight from the river, whichever is greater. <br /> <br />1555 <br />
