<br />. 00.2U018. . <br /> <br />Coal operators throughout Utah are l\()t optimistiC. They be1i$ve t~e <br />domestic ooal ma~ket, roughly 45 percent of present produotion, will suooumb <br />to the mounting Iliompetition of oil and gas. Their only hope is in wider use <br />of coal in the ~i'therindustrial developlllent of the West and Northwest. <br /> <br />The ooal washing and blending plant of the United States Steel Corpora- <br />tion, Geneva Steel Division, began operation durir..g April. The plant is on <br />the D&RGI"1 Railroad about 3 miles east of Wellingtcn. Capacity is reported as <br />600 tons of mine-run coal an hour, from the corporation's Columbia, Geneva, and' ' ", <br />Somerset (Colorado) mines. <br /> <br />The Kaiser Steel Oorporation closed davrn its banks of beehive coke <br />ovens late in February. Each of these ovens, j.n operation for about 40 years, <br />has a oapaoi ty 0:( 'l-lt2 tOns of 72-hour coke. <br /> <br />Uranium mining on the NavajO Reserration has diminished; in 1958 only <br />one mine (Taylor..Reed No.1) worked intsrmittently. This oould be due to <br />lac~ of interest, and the attitude of AEG and its milling problems. <br /> <br />l1ineral LE!a~ing, Idaho~- T~ere he.s been no new production from phosphate <br />leases in Idaho. ~ew la-year leases are being negotiated between the Fort <br />Hall Tribal Council and Food MaChir"ery Company with the Salae terms as the <br />leases just negoitated by J. R.
