Gilsonite is piped from the mine at Bonanza, Utah. <br /> <br />The commercial oil-shale reduction ple,nt of Union Oil Company on <br />Parachute Creek, Garfield County, continued its seemingly successful oper- <br />ation. The company annouroed a decision to shift from open..cut to under- <br />ground min.i.ng, in order to secure a uniformly better grade of shale. <br /> <br />Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company continued to operate on private <br />and public land in T. 10 S., R. 89 Wo, Pitkin County, in wMt appears to <br />be a good grade of coking and blmdi"lg coal. About 20 beehive ovens near <br />the mine, at Redstone, have been converted to mechanical operation and are <br />in production; an additional 35 ovens are soheduled. <br /> <br />Utah Construction Company has conoolidated large strippab1e coal <br />reserves in T. 6 N., R. 90 W. and 91 W., ~';o"rat County. The coal wUl be <br />used in a power and by-products plant proposed to be hunt near Craig, <br />Colorado. <br /> <br />Mineral Leasing, Arizona.- Prospect drilling on permits adjacent to <br />and south 01' Lake J~ead, Arizona, has disclosed large bodies of sodium <br />chloride, ~t moderate depths. Commercial prOduction may begin in the <br />early future. <br /> <br />Mineral Leasing, New Mexico.- The New Mexico Public Service Company <br />recently has applied for coal prospecting permits on a large aoreage of <br />public lands north of the San ,fuan River near Fruitland. It is seeking to <br />develop reserves of ooal for generating electric power. <br /> <br />Delhi-Taylor Oil Corporatton completed one test hold on the Care Creek <br />Anticline 16 mi:l.~s southwest of Moab, in May. This is the fourth hole <br />drilled. Additional tests have been delayed by rain and by high .rater in <br />the Colorado River. <br /> <br />The corporation is continuing its studies of potash possibUities, and <br />or methods to capitalize on its investment which is estimated in excess of <br />$1,,00,000. <br /> <br />Commercial ooal production in 19,8 has been about 2, percent below <br />that of a year ago. Consumption has declined, owing principally to a mild <br />winter in 19,7-,8 and to competition of both gas and oil. <br /> <br />The Utah Pow8r and Light Company and the Kemmerer Coal Company have <br />signed an agreement by which Utah Power v(Ou1d build two 150,OQO..klv plants <br />near Kemmerer Coal Is o1Jen-pi t mine, whi ch is about 5 miles west of Kemmerer. <br />One plant is to be in operation in 1963, and the other in 1968. The power <br />company required a guaranteed ho-year supply of coal. <br /> <br />Three coal leases totaling 3,120.97 acres have been issued in 19.58. <br />The coal is to be held for reserves. <br />
