<br />" 002G~6 <br /> <br />'-' UNITED STA'l'ES <br />DEPAR'l'MENT OF THE INTERIOR <br />GJ>XlLOGICAL SURVEY <br /> <br />\~.l <br /> <br />---------~------ <br /> <br />SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES IN THE PACIFIC S0UTHwEST <br />JANUARY - .TUNE 1958 <br /> <br />----------------- <br /> <br />Classifioation of lands and supervision of leases <br /> <br />Water and Power.- Two t.ria.l projects have been started in ooopera- <br />tion with the Topographic Division, With the ultimate purposes that the <br />special features of river surve;rs will be incorporated into standard <br />quadrangle maps and that sep~rate river-survey maps will be disoontinued. <br />For these trials, supplemental oontrol including S-foot water surfaoe <br />contour crossings was obtained for 30 linear miles of Cache Creek and 11 <br />miles of Soda Creek, California. Existing river maps covering an addi- <br />tional 29 linear miles of Cache Creek and 18 miles 0:': Pdah Creek will also <br />be incorporated. The stereooompiled manuscripts will shew the 5-foot <br />water-surfaoe orossings and supplemental 2o-foot oontours to a height of <br />300 feet above the s'bream bed. <br /> <br />Mineral Classification.- Geologie reports on 11 dam sites in north- <br />western Ol'egon were prepared for administrative use. <br /> <br />A Dfap of Arizona, showing all wells drilled for oil and gas J major <br />geologic features, and oil and gas pipe lines, was completed for publica- <br />tion. <br /> <br />An offioe was established atFat'mington, New ~Iexioo, to carry out <br />geologic projects in the Four-Corners region. <br /> <br />on and Gas Leasin~. - At the request of the Regional Attorney for <br />the Public Housing Administration, information and advice was furnished <br />on a proposed oil and gas lease beneath two housing projects Within the <br />City of Los Angeles. <br /> <br />Appraisals of oil and gas values for prodUCing leases in the Kern <br />Front field, Kern County, and the ArrrJYo Grande Oil field, San Luis <br />Obispo County, Cal,ifornia, were prepared for the Office of Alien Property. <br />One producing property was appraised at more 'than $2,000,000. <br /> <br />At the request of the Superintendent, Western Washington Indian <br />Agency, reconunendations were furnished on a proposed amendment to an oil <br />and gas lease involved in litigation entitled Uni tad States vs. State of <br />Washington, Gas and Oil Development Company, et al. <br /> <br />Exploration in western Colorado and eastern Utah developed additional <br />reserves of natural gas. <br /> <br />Mineral Leasing Colorado.- The 37,50o-kw REA steam-electric plant <br />of the Colorado-Ute ~ectric Association at Nucla was 40 percent completed. <br />It will be fueled in part by coal from publio lands in T. 46 N~, R. 15-16 <br />w., NMPM. <br /> <br />1. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />
