.

.

2
Effect of these changes on'project cost is unknown. Updated cost estimates
will be contained in the addendum to the DPR.

Although the flood control pool has been reduced, the dam and spillways will
be designed to accommodate the maximum probable flood.

Railroad Relocation

The Union Pacific Railroad will be relocated around the south side of the

Narrows Reservoir as described in the 1976 plan. The railroad currently

closely follows the north bank of the South Platte River through the

reservoir area.

The relocation will involve construction of about 26 miles of new track.

Major structures will include two bridges over the South Platte -- one

below the dam and another where the track recrosses the river at the west

end. A bridge also will be built over Kiowa Creek and two underpasses

constructed for existing State Highway 144.

Other Actions
Reclamation will purchase land around the top of the conservation pool in
10-acre instead of 40-acre blocks. Easements granting the right to inundate
land will also be sought in lieu of purchasing land outright.

Specific land requirements for fish and wildlife and recreation purposes have
not yet been determined. Some portion of these land requirements would be in
addition to the lands acquired around the top of the conservation pool. Total
land required for the project is now expected to be less than the 1976 estimate
of 42,000 acres.
