GUNNISON BASIN
k
Basinwide Conditions Assessment: 1
The SWSI value of+2.0 indicates that for January
the basin water supplies were above normal. The Soil
Conservation Service reports January 31 snowpack at 123%
of normal. Storage in Crawford, Fruitland, and Taylor
Park reservoirs totaled 89% of normal. Water supply
conditions are excellent in Division 4. Snowpack is good in ''1.''i ; . i
all areas except south and east Gunnison. Snowpack on
Monarch pass,at Taylor Park, and near Lake City is slightly
less than average.
Snow at both Telluride and Crested Butte Ski Areas
has been exceptional this year. The Butte gage near
Crested Butte reads 124% of average as of February 12th.
The Lizard Head gage near Telluride is 143% of average.
The exceptional snowpack is starting to raise some
concerns about potential flooding in the spring. The area
of greatest concern may be the south side of Grand Mesa.
Snow water equivalent for the Park Reservoir, McClure
Pass, and Mesa Lakes gages atop Grand Mesa is 181%, UNCOMPAHGRE RIVER NR, R I DGWAY
142%, and 172% of average, respectively. FLOW TAraa YEAR
25 _
24
23
With the good snowpack,we anticipate that we will 22
21
be able to fill most of the available storage capacity. This 20
;g_
year, the filling of Blue Mesa Reservoir will again be ! 15
,6.
controlled to allow flows to be bypassed to determine the i- 115
5
effect on endangered fish near Grand Junction. For this ▪I 13
reason, a significant share of the water available for Blue w- ia
- `
Mesa storage will be bypassed and the reservoir may need a I
to rely on a junior refill right or free river to fill. s
S
3
While there is still 2-1/2 months of potential snow 2
Oct Nov OfC Jan Pet, ►trcn
season left, it would appear that we will have an adequate 1,13NTN
water supply for all but the junior users in the more highly 0 WY(1004) 0 DRY(1977) a AVG x 1903
over-appropriated areas.
REPRESENTATIVE RESERVOIRS
GUNNISON RIVW BASIN
70
•
4!
kr 30 - :
a v •:\
20
10- ::\
ad
0 .....
Taylor Perk Crawford Fruitland
.::Avg. 1/31 Contents MI 1/31/93 Contents
f
6
