The City of Greeley appreciates the opportunity to provide
DRMS with additional information concerning Greeley's past and ongoing contacts with
members of the Rodman family, investigations, and implementation of mitigation steps
concerning potential impacts to the Rodman water wells, located southeast of Greeley's 25th
Avenue Site, from sand and gravel mining activities at the site.
Greeley's Communications with the Rodmans
As you may know, Greeley had communicated multiple times with the property owner, Mr. Bill
Rodman, prior to DRMS receiving the July 3, 2012 message from his daughter, Ms. Prather.
Previously, at Mr. Rodman's request shortly after the 25th Avenue Site dewatering began in
August 2012, the City recorded well water levels in the two wells on the Rodman property (see
Figure 1 prepared by Bill Schenderlein of Blue Earth Solutions, LLC, Greeley's project
consultant).
Mr. Rodman then contacted Mr. Schenderlein over concerns of water shortages in his wells on
May 28, 2013. Mr. Rodman stated that, during extended periods of irrigation, his water supply
was being interrupted because of low well water levels. On June 3, 2013, Mr. Schenderlein
measured ground water levels in the two Rodman wells (Figure 1). Relative to the August 2012
water level measurements, Well #1 (Permit No. 3597 -F -R) and Well #2 (Permit No. 055880 -F)
(see Figure 1) were 1.1 feet and 2.3 feet lower, respectively.
While these relatively small fluctuations in well water levels could be caused by any number of
influences (including annual or seasonal fluctuations, drought conditions, and/or aggregate
mining and reclamation on other sites immediately west and north of the Rodman property —see
attached Figure 2), Greeley took (and continues to take) prompt steps to investigate and
implement potential remedies of any potential impacts that its mining activities might have on
Mr. Rodman's wells.
Water and Sewer Department . 1100 10th Street, Suite 300, Greeley, CO 80631 .
