I would ask that the due date
for both reports be extended to Mazch 31, 1998.
As previously stated, the much friendlier utilities of this new version of Oracle
have allowed us to take a much closer look at our hydrologic database. It appears that in
the past, as efforts were made to update, correct, and overwrite old records, that many
new and often redundant records were inadvertently added to the database.
We have identified many duplicate records, found monitoring sites that have been
identified by multiple names, and found that analysis parameters have been reported under
multiple descriptions.
Since my last correspondence on this matter, we have completed transferring all
data into our new system. We have resolved the problems created by the multiple naming
of monitoring sites, and by the inconsistent description of analyses parameters. We have
also identified those records that had exact duplicates, and eliminated the redundant
information. We have, further, identified many more records that are, in fact, duplicate -
though not exact duplicates. These often differ by only a minute or two in the Sample
Instance Time, or by a difference of 1 in the Sequence Number (most of these differences
were an intentional attempt to manipulate the unwieldy behavior of the old software, while
some were undoubtedly typographical errors).
While exact duplicates could be compared and rectified globally, the non-exact
duplicates must be evaluated individually. Unfortunately, our database is very large and
there are many thousands of records yet to be evaluated. Obviously, the time
requirements for completing the cleanup of our data is not very compatible with the filing
requirements for Annual Hydrologic Reports on our mine permits.
