The
two reports dealt with items nes. 2 and 4 of the Division's November 17, 1998 letter
concerning field density testin;* procedures and a plan for compaction testing of the lower
lifts. The Division has the following responses:
The Division has no further concerns. The explanation by Lambert & Associates
of their field density testing procedure is acceptable to the Division.
4. The Division agrees with the proposed testing plan for the lower lifts at the gob
pile, with the following conditions;
a. The Division concurs with the Lambert & Associates engineer, Mr.
Johnston, that difficulty may be encountered if large cobbles are
encountered. Mr. Johnston states that the sampling tubes may be bent and
compressed, but that this would result in conservatively low determinations
of in-place density. In fact, the tubes may actually collapse, resulting in no
specimen retrieval and therefore no density determination. However, this
method should be less destructive to the GOB pile. Therefore, BRL must
be willing to accept the risk of completing multiple auger installations, if
