• • Ill lllllllllllll 111
999
STRTE OF COLOTZADO
Roy Romer, Gove
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Dlrsetor
July 8, 1988
Mr: Richard Hughes -
Colorado Yampa Coal Company
24587 Routt County Road No. 27
Oak Creek, Colorado 80467
RE: First and Second Quarter 1987-1986 Water Year Hydrology Reports
Mine No.l, Mine No.2, Eckman Park-C-81-071, and Mine No. 3, C-B4-D62
Dear Mr: Hughes:
We have reviewed the above-referenced reports and some possible problems have
been indentified. Please review this letter and provide a response at your
earliest convenience so that these possible problems can be corrected prior to
the end of the current water year: Note that we will not attempt to analyze
the data until the next Annual Hydrology Report is submitted.
General Questions (C-81-071 and C-84-062)
1. As discussed in our review of the Annual Hydrology Report for last
year, the detection limit for mercury is consistently higher than
the :00005 mg: /1, stream standard. Please attempt to achieve a
lower detection limit or provide an explanation if a lower limit is
not possible:
2. Several of the discharge measurements are expressed only as a stage
elevation in the computer printout. Please update the data base to
include the elevation to discharge conversion.
3. It is noted that in some cases discharge is not given because flow
was at some level below the capability of the developed rating
curve for the site. An alternate method for measuring discharge
should be used to estimate flow for these situations. Please
discuss a plan to remedy this problem.
4. Please be sure to collect the additional ground water samples as
discussed in the 1986-1987 Annual Hydrology Report review.
5. Carbonate is apparently not measured for any of the samples. We
understand that carbonate values should be very low in the local
water; however, it must be checked.
Please verify that carbonate will be analyzed or provide
documentation in the printouts that the levels are insignificant.
