To
establish completeness it was initially agreed that Castle Concrete would remain at least 200 feet from
the gas line until an agreement was made with the gas company as to how close Castle could mine to
the gas line. In the application it states that Castle would stay at least 50 feet from the 4 inch high
pressure gas line owned and operated by Greeley Gas Company.
Subsequent discussions with Greeley Gas indicated they would prefer the setback be 100 feet rather
than 50 feet. The problem they were concerned about is based on previous experience with gravel pits.
Sometimes slope collapse due to groundwater or heavy precipitation causes rapid erosion of the slope.
They felt that staying 100 feet from the gas line would allow time to control such erosion if it
occurred. They felt this problem would only exist during that time when Castle is mining nearby.
Since the excavation will be backfilled with overburden, once that backfilling of the pit near the gas
line is completed there should not be any problems.
As indicated in the agreement letters, Greeley Gas will mazk the location of the gas line. Castle will
then avoid excavations within 100 feet of that line and if erosion of the slope cuts back into the 100
foot setback Castle will take action to return the setback to the 100 foot point.
The mining plan maps show excavations occurring to 50 feet from the gas line. If the Division desires
new versions of the relevant maps they can be changed to show a 100 foot setback. Otherwise, it is
agreed that this gas line setback will become a part of the permit requirements. Please let myself know
your desires regarding the maps. If you desire new maps, perhaps it would be best to wait for
completion of the review process to see if any other changes are needed on the maps. Then as part of
the adequacy response new maps with this and any other changes could be provided.
Re~sp/ec~tfu/l~ly, ~J
~//GG~C Ll ~ r~~e G~i ,
Mark A: Heffner
cc: Castle Concrete Company
Bob Deaver, Greeley Gas Company
