Mineral Policy Center is a national nonprofit
organizat:~~n working with communities to reduce the negative impacts of modern
mining.
)ite: Proposed Stone Gravel Pit; Cortez, Colorado PpFsLIC FILE COPY
FILE: 89
Dear Mr. Erickson, SITE: S-~ P G~V` p~ t
! Mineral }' .]icy Center has reviewed application for a Regular (112) Construction
Materials Operation Reclamation Permit submitted by Darren Stone of Stone Crushing.
Mr. Stone proposes to construct a gravel mine on 160 acres of land with surface righu
owned by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
I
I i Mineral Policy Center urges the Division of Minerals and Geology to deny this permit
I ~
as it is currently written. This permit application lacks sufficient information to meet
the criteria required by the (112) Consuuction Materials permit.
'; Importantly, the applicant has failed to identify significant features of his proposed
' mine. A map submitted indicates that the project will involve 12 phases, however, only
! 4 are identified in the proposed permit. The public is left to extrapolate in the haziest
of manners on how the remaining acreage will be impacted. ]n addition, the applicant
has not indicated the location or construction information for any roads in the proposed
project area. Trailers, processing equipment, and other facilities are similarly omitted.
Stonc Crushing will significantly impact this landscape and the burden of explanation
and proof is upon them to acknowledge what the impacts will be. T}ris has most
certainly not been accomplished.
Equally significant, the permit application fails to identify the water source to support
tJre project. This oenission makes it impossible for the Division and the public to even
vaguely estimate the type and scope of impacts to water quantity and Quality in the area.
__.-. ..__~- `......,d,%'wl:~~fhi'ndi4iR'eV2?~.d4r YJ :'i%~r ~i:~ -
• P.
