Long
Division Director
The Division of Minerals and Geology is currently planning the
remaining reclamation work at the Hawk's Nest Mine. The Hawk's
Nest mine is located 10 miles East of Paonia within the S1/2 of
Section 10, T135, R90W. The mine site has been ordered to be
reclaimed by the Colorado Department of Natural Resources, Mined
Land Reclamation Board. The operator of the mine failed to comply
with regulatory requirements for an extended period of time,
resulting in revocation of the mining permit and forfeiture of the
reclamation performance bond being held by the Division of Minerals
and Geology. The Board has directed the Office of Mined Land
Reclamation, Coal Regulatory section of the Division, to secure
reclamation of the site using funds obtained from the forfeited
Initial reclamation of the site was conducted in 1990. The
remaining reclamation work to be conducted on site includes the
coal silo area and the refuse disposal area located in Hotchkiss.
Part of the reclamation plan involves demolition and removal of the
two concrete coal silos located on the Hawk's Nest site.
The silos were owned by Western Slope Carbon Inc. as part of the
Hawk's Nest coal mining operation. According to our files,
Mountain Coal Company (owned by ARCO Coal Company) acquired the two
concrete silos and overhead conveyor from the Denver Rio Grande
Western Railroad. ARCO has decided not to include the silos in the
west Elk permit due to the cost of restoring and maintaining the
silos. The Division is currently in the process of planning the
reclamation of the coal silo facility including demolition and
removal of the two concrete silos.
iii iuiininiu iii
~T~TE OF CO~"~;,99~~~v
